If you’re wondering if affiliate marketing is a scam, I’ll tell you right now, it is not. But, I can see why you might think that.

With the increase in online opportunities to make money, it’s natural to have concerns about how real some of these “opportunities” are.

In this article, I will go deeper into this topic and explain

Is Affiliate Marketing a scam?

NO, affiliate marketing is not a scam.

It’s a legitimate and widely used business model where individuals—like you and me—promote products or services from various companies and earn a commission on every sale or action taken through their efforts.

It’s very simple: I bring you sales, you give me a commission.

Affiliate marketers promote products or services through various online (usually) channels, such as websites, social networks, email marketing, etc.

When someone clicks on the affiliate’s unique tracking link and makes a purchase or completes a specific action (such as subscribing to a newsletter, filling out a form, or installing an app), the affiliate earns a commission.

Affiliate marketing is a win-win-win situation for everyone involved:

  • Companies benefit from the increased exposure and sales generated by affiliate marketers.
  • Affiliate marketers earn a commission for their efforts.
  • Customers discover products or services that may interest them through affiliate recommendations.

However, it is important to note that, like everything in life, there can be scams or unethical practices in affiliate marketing— which I will explain below.

For now, it’s good to understand that affiliate marketing is essentially a form of selling. Keep reading to learn more.

Affiliate Marketing = Sales

When a company hires you, they’ll give you a base salary and then say, “Any sales you make, you’ll get X% commission on each sale.” So, the salesperson tries to get as many sales as possible to increase their salary.

The affiliate marketer does the same thing, with the only difference being that they don’t have a base salary. They become an affiliate with a company and start promoting its products or services. From every sale they make, they get a commission. The more sales they achieve, the greater their income will be.

So, you can understand that affiliate marketing is essentially sales.

Below, I will compare the work of the affiliate marketer with the work of the salesperson in the “offline” world to see what the two types of sales have in common.

AffiliateSeller
Sales approachAn affiliate marketer promotes products or services through various online channels, such as blogging, social networks or email marketing.

They utilize content creation, SEO techniques and online advertising to attract customers.
A salesperson employed by a company usually interacts directly with customers, either in person or over the phone.

He or she engages in face-to-face selling, actively reaches out to potential customers, makes sales and addresses customer concerns to close the sale.
Product ownershipAffiliate marketers do not have any connection to the product they are promoting and many times they are not “tied” to the product they are promoting.

Their goal is to increase traffic through their affiliate links and convert visitors into customers.
A salesperson working for a company often represents the company itself and its products or services.

His or her goal is to increase the company’s sales either to existing customers or by finding new ones. Usually, he is “tied” to the product.
IndependenceAn affiliate marketer works independently. He sets his own hours and days to work.

He alone chooses the products or services he wants to promote, as well as the strategies he wants to use.

He has the flexibility to work from anywhere and can promote multiple products or services at the same time.
A salesperson working for a company works within the company’s guidelines and follows specific sales procedures and strategies.

He or she is often part of a sales team and works under the supervision and guidance of a sales manager.

Usually, he or she does not have the flexibility of time and space that an affiliate marketer has.
BenefitsAffiliate marketers earn a commission for every successful sale or recommendation they make.

Commission rates may vary depending on the affiliate program and the specific product or service being promoted.
Salespeople usually receive a fixed basic salary together with a percentage commission for each sale they make .

The commission may vary between companies and industries.
Relationship with CustomersAffiliate marketers usually have less contact with customers. They don’t deal with questions, complaints or meetings.

They often rely on online marketing tactics to bring traffic and sales to the products/services they promote.
Salespeople interact directly with customers, building relationships, addressing concerns and providing assistance.

They often have more opportunities for upselling, meeting, networking and customer loyalty.

Examples of affiliate marketing fraud

As in any profession, there are “good” and “bad” people in affiliate marketing.

Make millions without breaking a sweat

Some scammers may try to sell “get rich quick schemes” or programs that promise easy and instant wealth through affiliate marketing.

They make exaggerated claims about profit potential without emphasizing the hard work, time and effort required.

A typical example that promises easy and instant wealth through affiliate marketing.

It is usually presented as being so easy that even your grandmother could do it.

This of course is not true, since to succeed in affiliate marketing requires PROMISE, HOPE and DETERMINATION TO LEARN.

MLM programs “disguised” as affiliate marketing

Multi-level marketing (MLM) programs operate on a different model than affiliate marketing.

While affiliate marketing focuses on promoting products or services and earning commissions based on sales, MLM programs often involve recruiting other people into a network and earning commissions from their sales.

Some MLM programs may misleadingly use the term “affiliate marketing” to confuse potential participants.

It is important to understand how an MLM program works and how affiliate marketing works so that you can distinguish them and not be confused by the “bad” people in the industry.

“Cunning” affiliate marketers

Unfortunately, there are individuals in every industry who resort to deceptive practices to gain commissions.

They may provide false information, make exaggerated claims, use misleading tactics or even deceive people to earn a commission – tarnishing the affiliate marketing name.

For example, many affiliate marketers promote low quality products without caring.

Aclassic example of promoting bad products without having tested them for the sole purpose of misleading the market.

To do so they may use tactics such as spamming, they may create YouTube videos or other content that falsely claims to review or endorse a product, while their primary intention is to make sales without providing real value to the public.

Bad products affiliate marketing networks

There may be products or affiliate marketing networks that are scams or operate unethically.

They may for example deceive affiliate marketers themselves by not providing the promised commission payments (I personally got caught once), change the terms and conditions without notice or fail to provide the products or services as advertised.

It is very important to choose products and services from serious companies and to contract with networks that have a good reputation and payment history.

What do you need to succeed in affiliate marketing?

To succeed in affiliate marketing, you need consistency, patience and focus. Let me explain what I mean:

Consistency

Consistency is vital because building a successful affiliate marketing business requires constant effort.

Consistent content creation and promotion, optimizing strategies and interacting with your audience are essential for long-term success.

Patience

Patience is also vital in affiliate marketing. It takes time to develop your audience, establish your online presence and generate a steady income.

Overnight success is rare and it is important to understand that the results you dream of may take months or even years to materialize.

Patience allows you to stay committed, learn from your experiences and keep moving forward even in difficult times.

Focus

Focus is another critical aspect of success in affiliate marketing.

With the sheer volume of information and opportunities available online, it’s easy to get distracted or overload your brain.

Focusing on specific marketing tactics, focusing on specific marketing tools, focusing on promoting specific products will get you to your goals faster.

Final Words

In the world of affiliate marketing, the line between success and fraud can sometimes be blurred.

While affiliate marketing itself is a legitimate and effective business model, it is important to be aware of the potential scams, unethical practices and unrealistic promises that can mislead would-be marketers.

To move successfully in this industry, you need consistency, patience and commitment.

Remember, success in affiliate marketing is possible if you never stop and never lose your vision.
